I assisted at the service of induction for the Revd Maxwell Doss as General Secretary of the National Christian Council of Sri Lanka. He takes over from the Revd Ebenezer Joseph, who is now the President designate of the Methodist Church.
Candles were lit on a map of the island by representatives of all the historic denominations and by Buddhist and Muslim leaders.
It was a powerful service celebrating common commitment to the journey of peace and justice.
At a fellowship lunch with the church leaders, we talked about the upcoming parliamentary elections and I was asked to seek the prayers of the Methodist people between now and the last week of April. It is unfortunately clear which party will probably gain a majority, but the hope is to avoid a two thirds majority, which would enable constitutional changes to be pushed through.
